Tradescantia Is the Fast-Growing Purple Your Terrarium Has Been Waiting For

Tradescantia zebrina. Also known as Wandering Dude, Inch Plant, or “the purple-and-silver trailing thing I see everywhere and finally need to know the name of.” It’s one of the fastest-growing plants we carry, which means it fills in bare spots faster than almost anything else in the greenhouse.

The leaves are the whole show: two-toned silver and green on top, vivid purple underneath. Pin one to a cork bark background, let it spill over a ledge, or let it trail down from a shelf — it looks intentional everywhere. It’s the kind of plant that makes a build look finished.

And it propagates so easily it’s almost annoying. Snip a stem, stick it in soil, done.

Here’s what you need to know

  • Light: Bright indirect light keeps the color boldest. It tolerates lower light but the purple fades — give it a good spot and it pays you back.
  • Water: Let the top inch of soil dry between waterings. It’s forgiving of occasional drought but doesn’t like to stay soggy.
  • Humidity: Average to high. Happy in most household conditions, thrives in terrarium humidity.
  • Growth: Fast. Very fast. Pinch tips regularly to keep it bushy rather than stringy.
  • Pet safety: Can cause mild skin irritation in cats and dogs — keep out of reach of pets that like to chew.

In a terrarium or vivarium build

This is one of our go-to plants for vivarium backgrounds and groundcover. It roots wherever a node touches substrate, spreads fast, and the purple underside creates visual depth you just don’t get from solid-green plants. It pairs beautifully with darker mosses and cork bark texture.

Small batch in now — each one ships rooted and already trailing.
