Rubber Plant Looks Expensive. It Isn't High-Maintenance Enough to Prove It.

Rubber Plant Ficus elastica with glossy dark green leaves in pot

Rubber Plant. Thick, glossy leaves in a deep burgundy-green, stacked up a single sturdy stem. It looks like the kind of plant that requires a subscription service and a humidifier. It does not.

Ficus elastica is one of the easiest statement plants there is. Each new leaf unfurls from a slim reddish sheath, which is honestly the closest thing to a magic trick this plant performs — otherwise it just sits there looking sharp and asking very little of you.

Here's what you need to know

  • Light: Bright, indirect light. Tolerates lower light but grows slower and less glossy.
  • Water: Let the top couple inches of soil dry between waterings — it would rather be too dry than too wet.
  • Humidity: Average household humidity is fine.
  • Growth: Upright, can reach 6+ feet indoors over time.
  • Pet safety: Mildly toxic to cats and dogs — sap can irritate skin and mouth.

In a home

This one grows too large for terrarium or vivarium enclosures — it wants room to grow up, not in. Best kept as a standalone floor or tabletop houseplant. Wipe the leaves occasionally with a damp cloth and they'll shine like you did something.
